2011 Sustainability Report

The 2011 Sustainability Report is the third annual report Sun Chemical has issued and is part of our on-going effort to be data-driven in our approach to understanding our impact on the environment. Sun Chemical’s sustainability policy is based on the concept of eco-efficiency as defined by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Eco-efficiency is achieved by the delivery of economically competitive goods and services that satisfy our customers’ needs and bring quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological impact and resource intensity throughout the life-cycle.

Our commitment to sound, objective data led us to engage our SunCare™ Environmental Services and Consulting partner, ENVIRON, to assess our environmental footprint and to complete nine analyses to quantify a baseline carbon footprint for six different product lines, nine products, produced at nine different facilities in the United States and Europe.

Eight of these analyses focused on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission associated with
the product manufacturing and distribution phases, specifically “gate-to-customer gate”
analyses. A ninth analysis expanded the scope of our inquiry to consider the GHG emissions
associated with the full product lifecycle, adding consideration of product raw materials,
supplier distribution, and other elements.

The resulting data will be used as a major input into the evaluation of opportunities for continual
improvement in our environmental performance and operation efficiency and to help our
customers and consumers to understand the factors impacting our carbon footprint.

This report was specifically written to present the findings of both the “gate-to-customer gate”
carbon footprint assessments as well as the full product lifecycle assessment we completed
as part of our commitment to understanding the impact we have on the environment.
